Soon we will return to Far, Far Away! After a long wait, it finally seems to have been confirmed –and from a good source– that Shrek 5 it is already in active development and that, in addition, the film will be a trip to the past, not because of its history, but because of the involvement of old acquaintances.
During an interview with Variety to promote the premiere of Super Mario Bros. – The Movie, Illumination Entertainment studio head and Dreamworks Animation creative partner Chris Meledandri said he was planning for the franchise’s original voice cast to return for this fifth installment of the adventures of the green ogre and company. According to his words, the negotiations are advancing.
“It’s not too different from the process we went through with Mario, where you look at the basic elements that the audience liked and do everything you can to respect those basic elements. And then you work hard to build story elements and new characters that take you to whole new places. The original cast is a huge part of that.«.
In 2001, when the first Shrek movie hit theaters, one of the things that most liked about the production was the work of the vocal cast. The leads were Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, and their performances as Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona quickly became iconic.
So well received were their roles that for many years the public has asked to see more stories focused on each character. One of the most beloved is Donkey, played by Eddie Murphy. Recently, the actor and comedian also expressed his desire for a spin-off focused on the funny animal.
“I would be absolutely open in case they ever come up with another Shrek movie, I would do it in two seconds,” Murphy said. “I love Donkey. They made Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have made a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he’s not as funny as Donkey.”
Now, Meledandri hinted that he supports the idea, because when asked if he would like to get involved in the production, he replied: “Without hesitation.”
