Actor Jason Biggs apparently did so after his son was born.
Let’s be clear: There is absolutely no reason why a man should eat a placenta . Although it is painfully obvious, we feel compelled to remind you because actor Jason Biggs apparently ingested his wife Jenny Mollen’s placenta after the birth of his second.
The practice of eating the placenta after birth has been popularized by Kim Kardashian and January Jones, who had their placentas turned into pills and claimed to have enjoyed improvements in mood and increased energy as a result of eating them. Mollen, following the example, had his placenta turned into pills.
What surprised her was that her husband joined the party. According to People, Mollen posted a video on Instagram, announcing “I’m going home to eat my placenta .” Biggs, who was with her, chimed in, “I’m excited to try it.
People who promote placenta intake say it offers a multitude of health benefits for mothers after childbirth, decreasing pain after and the risk of postpartum depression, increasing energy, helping with lactation, improving elasticity of the skin and replenishing iron; however, there is very little scientific evidence to support this. In fact, researchers at Northwestern University School of Medicine conducted a study and found no evidence that placental intake had any of these putative effects on mothers. Furthermore, there is zero research or evidence to suggest that placental intake will do anything for the father.
There have even been cases in which the intake of the placenta by mothers affects the baby. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention released a report earlier this year highlighting a case of an infant infected with group B streptococcus – a bacterium commonly found in adults, but that can cause serious illness in newborns. born, including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. After the doctors started treatment, they finally identified the problem: The placental pills the mother was ingesting contained the bacteria that made her baby sick and she probably transferred it through skin contact.
What is the lesson here?
No matter how much you loved Biggs’ role in American Pie, don’t eat placenta . Do not do it. Yes, a super pill that improves mood sounds tempting. However, we are sorry, but eating a placenta is not going to do it.
