When it comes to buying clothes, for me there is nothing better than the face-to-face experience: feeling the texture of the fabrics, that the size is ideal, that no button is missing and I confess that I almost always fall for the beautiful changing rooms with mirrors gigantic and light designed to make you look amazing.
It seems that when ordering a garment online the only risk is that it does not fit you or that it is of lower quality than that offered on the monitor and end up being the protagonist of a meme of “what I ordered vs what I got” but in Mexico, country in which criminals find any loophole to commit crimes and in which the authorities care little, or very little, about the safety of citizens, that is the least of it.
Last week a relative bought a skirt for 6 thousand pesos in a store, he showed it off not only because it is very pretty but also because he had managed to pay for it in months without interest. Like surely all of us, we were also victims of espionage for marketing purposes, we received -after a talk- a super promotion: the same skirt for a thousand pesos, of course we entered the official site of the Diesel store (or so it seemed) and We tried to buy it, but not before making a claim in the store for such a scam, the managers told us that the site was false and that of course, they did not have those prices.
We were about to land on a very well done page whose only difference from the official one was a small variation in the electronic address. One would think that this type of fraud is aimed at financial operations, but no, also when buying a skirt or any other product and it is very easy to confuse the consumer with the sophistication of the criminals.
According to the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (Condusef), up to 463 cyber frauds are committed every hour in electronic commerce and mobile banking operations, which places Mexico as the country with the most cases in Latin America.
In addition, Mexico had a very difficult 2021 in terms of cybersecurity because compared to 2020, the country had an increase of 52 percent in complaints of online banking fraud, according to the same Commission.
On the other hand, the cybersecurity company Surfshark conducted a study on the 10 countries with the most cybercrime, which revealed that Mexico ranks ninth with fourteen victims per million Internet users, followed by India.
In total, 1,164 Mexican Internet users were victims of cybercriminals in 2020, which shows a growth of 92 percent compared to 2019.
Recently, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation blocked a bill to obtain the biometric data of the 132 million cell phone users in the country, which, among other things, sought to improve the electronic security of all, the court will have its reasons, privacy among them, and if that is not the path, another one will have to be found at the height of the great business that telecommunications represent in the country.
The promotion of electronic commerce, especially after the pandemic, should be monitored by the authorities and also by the brands that, if detected, must report the impersonation of their virtual stores, otherwise the trust that has been established until now will be lost. hard earned. The only thing left for us is to check the electronic sites, be careful, although from my point of view, the best thing is that you go to the store and enjoy your purchases.
