So Eren already knew what was coming AND GOED FORWARD?
The last big reveal we saw in Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) episode 20 provides a whole new context to one of the most pivotal moments in the series that occurred in season 3 when Eren Jaeger he kissed Historia Reiss’s hand and had some revelations. From that point on, this character had a very different personality that only got worse in the fourth and final season of the anime making him the main villain of the saga (or anti-hero, to some). This radical, almost villainous change in Eren came about after memories of his father assailed him when he kissed Historia’s hand near the end of Season 3..
Now in Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) Season 4, Episode 20, “Future Memories”, we see that while Grisha Jaeger was struggling with his task of massacring the Reiss family, there was a brief memory of Eren kissing the hand of history. This confirmed exactly what Eren saw when he kissed Historia Reiss’s hand: he saw the future.. Specifically, he saw the precise moment of his father’s massacre against the royal family of the island of Paradis.
In the Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) chapter, we see how Grisha pleads with the Reiss family to use the Founding Titan to stop Marley’s attack on Paradis Island. However, they desist due to their resignation vow which they inherit with their titan.. This was the change that led him to commit regicide, since he could not allow the entire Eldian people to fall at the hands of the empire, much less his family.
It was all Eren Jaeger’s plan in Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan)
The episode also revealed that the Attack Titan has a special ability that even the royal family did not know existed, as it allows its bearers to see the memories of future heirs.. But, with a big asterisk: the current user of the Attack Titan cannot deliberately see the future, he can only see what the future heirs show him. Even though he apparently never received a memory of the future, his powers allowed Eren to see the future when he kissed Historia’s hand, in an extremely roundabout way.
To avoid confusion below, the following references to Eren will be arranged as such: Season-3-Eren, Season-4-Eren, and Future Eren, where Future Eren is a version of the character that appears to exist in a time beyond the anime (if you are a fan of manga, you already know what it is about). Judging by Grisha’s words, the Future Eren has been pulling the strings on the series for quite some time and whatever the plan is for Season-4-ErenIt’s terrible and it’s going to be successful. It’s not clear if Grisha had a glimpse of how he would use Earth’s Rumble to destroy humanity or not, but just how big its consequences would be.
When Season-3-Eren kissed Historia’s hand, he saw Grisha’s memory of his massacre of the Reiss family, which Grisha did on Future Eren’s orders, with Season-4-Eren present through Founder Titan’s powers of Zeke Jaeger, his brother. Although Season-4-Eren only goaded Grisha into killing the Reiss family, Grisha later confirmed that he saw the end result of his plans. In a nutshell, Season-3-Eren saw Season-4-Eren in Grisha’s memory, and through Grisha’s memory, he saw Future Eren’s plan.
Whatever Eren Jaeger’s ultimate goal is as of Season 4 Episode 20, it is so terrible that his own father begged Zeke to stop Eren, even though Grisha had been cooperating with Future Eren’s instructions. until that moment. Eren’s behavior in season 4, withdrawn and almost depressed, takes on a whole new light, as it is now clear that he has been living his life knowing the outcome of his actions. It’s more, possibly feeling the guilt of the deaths of his own family and the Shinganshina District on his shoulders, “why would he allow all this to happen?” That’s something we’re going to find out in the final arc of the anime..
