Retro is always in fashion, in any area of life. Even in video games. This the master knows Shigeru Miyamoto, executive of Nintendo, but he wants to look to the future and offer “new experiences”.
Miyamoto spoke during the company’s financial statement presentation. His statements are quoted by Game Rant.
One of the big questions regarding Nintendo is knowing when a new console will come out. Nintendo Switch has been a huge success, and the market has barely emerged from the pandemic crisis.
However, there is talk of 2024 for the year of the appearance of a new console, according to Atomix portal.
Master Miyamoto was asked, in the investor question and answer session, about the possibility of working with retro video games on the company’s next console.
This was the answer:
“In the past, we provided a service known as ‘Virtual Console’ that allowed users to play older video games on newer consoles. As long as the hardware remained unchanged, those games could continue to play.”
“However,” said Miyamoto, “Video game publishing rights are complicated and we have said that we will only add titles after securing the necessary rights.”
Play retro titles on new Nintendo consoles? This says Shigeru Miyamoto
The Nintendo executive reviewed the development environments of each console.
“Of course, video games developed for dedicated consoles were created in different development environments for each console. As a result, when the hardware changed, the development environment was not necessarily reusable. and therefore video games that had been released on older consoles could not be played on newer consoles without additional modifications.”

Miyamoto acknowledges that it’s getting easier these days to play retro titles on newer consoles. But for him, the key is in the future, in what has never been seen, not in the past.
“Nintendo’s strength is in creating new video game experiences, so when we release new hardware in the future, we would like to show unique video games that could not be created with pre-existing hardware”.
