Scandal in football Cameroon. This Monday, March 11, the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) announced that 62 players from the local championship, MTN Elite One, were suspended and will not be able to play in the play offs for double identity and falsifying their age. Nathan Douala, from Victoria United, is one of the most striking cases because he is supposedly 17 years old and a few months ago he was called up to the Cameroon National Team. It is an unprecedented event in the football world.
The Douala team was one of the most affected by the decision of the governing body of football in Cameroon: seven players were suspended and will not be taken into account for the remainder of the tournament. However, the biggest punishment was suffered by the Young Sport club: the Federation decided to declare 13 of its players ineligible. A strong and well-deserved punishment for blatantly lying about one's age.
It is worth mentioning that only four clubs in the championship did not present anomalies and will be able to finish the season with their entire squad. These are: Coton Sport de Garoua, Canon de Yaoundé, Stade Renard de Melong and Aigle Royal de la Manoua. On the other hand, this controversy has further stained Cameroonian football, which has former player Samuel Eto'o as president of the Federation.
In the midst of this delicate panorama, Samuel Eto'o is being investigated by the African Football Federation for his extensive history of scandals that include incitement to violence, physical threats, abuse of power, match fixing and the spread of false information. Although the former player denies the accusations, other Cameroonian football authorities asked FIFA to act on the matter.
