A complex surgery was performed on a patient with seven days in national aortoplasty with the use of a fenestrated bovine patch, a procedure that had not been performed in 10 years at the General Hospital of La Razaaccording to what was reported by the IMSS in a statement.
According to the IMSS statement, For more than eight hours, specialists from the General Hospital of the National Medical Center (CMN) La Raza of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) performed a complex corrective surgery on the left ventricle of the heart of patient André Paolo, just seven days old, to have a chance at life.
Dr. Lourdes Catalina Cano Villalpando, a doctor at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the Pediatric Division of this hospital, highlighted that a congenital heart malformation was detected from the 27th week of gestation, for which a Comprehensive plan to provide close monitoring during pregnancy and immediate care at birth.
“Being a Third Level unit, we are referred to complex cases that cannot be resolved in hospitals at other levels, we have more than 30 specialties to provide comprehensive management and that the mortality of the newborn decreases considerably, as well as its morbidity”, projection.
He said that André Paolo was born on November 8, 2022 at the Hospital de Gineco Obstetricia No. 3 of the CMN La Raza, where from day one he was given intravenous prostaglandins to keep his heart stable, while specialists in Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery searched for the best alternative to repair his heart.
He explained that on November 14, the minor was admitted to the operating room, when seeing the real anatomy of the patient, an unusual surgical approach was decided: an aortoplasty with the use of a fenestrated bovine patch; “The cardiovascular surgeon, Max Luna, told us that it is the first case in 10 years in this hospital that a total correction of the heart is performed to favor the patient’s prognosis.”
Dr. Cano Villalpando highlighted that after the surgery the minor was transferred to the NICU in critical condition, with the sternum open and under mechanical ventilation. “he managed to progress in a short time, cardiac function stabilized and subsequently successful extubation was performed. Normally in this type of heart disease surgery is palliative, but in his case it was corrective and does not require further operations”.
Mrs. Claudia Ramírez, André Paolo’s mother, highlighted that when she went to the prenatal consultations they performed an ultrasound and the anomaly was detected there; a cardiologist made a drawing for her to better explain what was happening in her baby’s heart, “that’s when I understood the complexity it had.”
The patient’s mother commented that after the birth, she was only able to be with him for a short time, “it was total anguish when they explained the type of surgery to us, but I knew that I would be in good hands, the doctors told me: we are going to give the baby a chance, because it was very, very complex.”
