The mexican government announced this Monday that it will not withdraw the university degree of yasmin esquivelMinister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SJCN) nominated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, accused of plagiarizing her undergraduate thesis.
The Secretary of the Interior, Adam Augusto Lopezindicated that the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) will reject the request National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM)where Esquivel studied, to solve the judge’s case.
The Secretary of Public Education today will send the formal response to that official letter, in the sense that is not empowered Directorate General of Professions to cancel any degree”,
López commented at the Government’s daily press conference.
The statements come after the UNAM determined last Wednesday that the thesis that Esquivel presented in 1987 “it is a substantial copy” of the one delivered in 1986 by the then student Edgar Ulises Báez.
Although the Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Aragon of the UNAM admitted that the thesis was copied, commissioned the SEP the Government the final decision on withdrawing his university degree.
But the Secretary of the Interior answered this Monday that the SEP could only cancel the registration, but there must be a judicial resolution or a disqualification, “something that the UNAM has not completed.”
AMLO wants UNAM to decide on the title of Yasmín Esquivel
Lopez considered that the University Council and the UNAM university courtone of the highest ranked universities in Latin America, must decide.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico, the rector, will be asked not to evade his responsibility, but rather to issue a resolution.”
the official said.
The controversy surrounding Esquivel’s thesis, accused of being close to the Government, broke out last December during her candidacy to be the new president of the Supreme Court, which on January 2 was won by Minister Norma Piña.
dodgeproposed in 2019 by López Obrador, has been controversial for being the wife of one of the government’s favorite contractors and for voting in favor of the current president’s issues, such as the consultation to prosecute former presidents and the reform to the Electricity Industry Law.
Specialists have warned that if Esquivel lost her title, she would have to leave the Supreme Court because she did not have a law degree, as established by law, and this would unleash a crisis of legitimacy of the votes in which she participated.
