- During the last 40 years, the number of people with this condition in Mexico has tripled.
- In its conventional classification, diabetes is divided into 3 categories: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational.
- This new project will allow the patient to have adequate treatment and lead a better quality of life.
It is no secret to anyone that Mexico is in a serious diabetes crisis. One of the main reasons is the lifestyle maintained by the majority of the population. Currently there are at least nine million people with this condition, although the number could be much higher due to the lack of constant medical check-ups.
Personalized treatment for all patients
With this in mind, the Plenary of the Senate of the Republic approved an opinion that reforms the General law of health. The objective is for the health authorities and public health institutions to make a precise and differentiated diagnosis of the type of diabetes that a person may have.
The reform, endorsed with 88 votes and sent to the Chamber of Deputies, proposes that this disease be classified into at least three types: Diabetes Type 1, Type 2 and Gestational.
Furthermore, it establishes that the Official Mexican Standard of the matter has to differentiate and address, at least, each of these types of diabetes.
With that, added to the documentit is sought that, in a clear and precise way, the type of diabetes can be differentiated and thus carry out an accurate diagnosis, with a personalized treatment, which allows the patient to lead a better quality of life.
The opinion specifies that, due to the particular and special characteristics of diabetes, it is necessary to differentiate Type 1, Type 2, as well as Gestational, in order that the treatment that a person needs is adequate.
Importance of preventive medicine
The president of the Health Commission, Lilia Margarita Valdez Martinezpointed out that with this reform an enormous step is taken for the benefit of the diabetic patients. However, it is a preventable disease, so rather than cure it “we must insist on prevention so that citizens do not get sick, especially the new generations”.
The president of the Legislative Studies Commission, Manuel Anorve Baños, said that it is important to implement strategies to prevent, monitor and control this disease. Through a preventive culture in the area of health, significant advances can be made when it comes to saving lives, guaranteeing a healthy life and promoting well-being at all ages.
For her part, Senator Guadalupe Covarrubias Cervantes considered that this proposal will strengthen the National Health System in Mexico. By establishing the types of diabetes in the law and carrying out an accurate diagnosis, timely and specialized treatment for the population will be sought.
In her opportunity, Senator AAlejandra Noemi Reynoso Sanchez indicated that the opinion makes a big difference to promote a better quality of life for children and adults, because it is essential that the health system can diagnose the type of diabetes suffered by a patient in a timely manner.
