Patricia Mercado Castro, senator of Movimiento Ciudadano, proposed extending paternity leave to eight weeks, in an attempt to guarantee rights between men and women.
The initiative includes both births and adoption and grants two weeks prior to the arrival of the child. Later the parents would have six more weeks that would be established in the Federal Labor Law.
Mercado Castro indicated that the eight weeks would be with pay; a noticeable 5-day improvement currently in effect for men who become fathers.
This number of weeks is covered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The initiative was referred to the Labor and Social Welfare and Legislative Studies commissions.
