The pharmaceutical industry has been a fundamental part during the current health emergency. The most notorious example has been the development of different vaccines against Covid-19. It has also managed to specify some pills that have shown good results in positive cases. While another of its functions has been to verify that some drugs do not work and may even be counterproductive. One of the cases that has been mentioned the most is Ivermectin, which should never be used in infected patients.
What was it created for?
This option has been marketed for decades. In the case of humans, it is ingested orally and acts as a dewormer and in the form of a cream for the treatment of rosacea. And in the case of animals, it is applied by injection and, to a lesser extent, orally in horses, cattle, goats, sheep, swine, dogs and cats to combat nematodiasis, ticks and scabies, among other diseases.
The evidence shows that it does not work against Covid-19
The reality is that since last year the World Health Organization (WHO) published a statement in which showed his stance. When asked if Ivermectin should be taken for the prevention or treatment of Covid-19, the direct answer is no. He added that this drug does not have permission for this type of use and all health professionals should refrain from indicating or recommending it to their patients.
He added that in the case of humans, when consumed as a treatment against Covid-19, what it generates is nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure, allergic reactions, dizziness, balance problems and seizures. Although when the dose is too high it can even cause coma and death.
In fact, it was also revealed that doctors from the University of Benha in Egypt who supported the use of the antiparasitic recognized that they falsified data. As a consequence and for ethical reasons, they recognized their error and concluded all the investigations they were carrying out.
CDMX maintains its use despite international warnings
But now the issue has resurfaced due to an investigation published on the Animal Politico portal. There it is mentioned that the Ministry of Health of Mexico City (Sedesa) uses Ivermectin in infected patients. Based on the documentation, they have been allocated 29 million pesos in the purchase of the drug to give it to people with Covid-19.
As a justification, the dependency He responded that clinical trials in Iraq, Argentina and Brazil have shown that it does work. Although he never revealed the sources or the specific evidence he mentions. While he assures that the use of this and other drugs such as azithromycin and acetylsalicylic acid is planned to continue, although real scientific evidence is lacking.
For its part, it should be remembered that even the Guide for the Treatment of Covid-19 published by the Federal Ministry of Health (SSa) emphasizes that Ivermectin should not be used in infected patients.
Due to the above, Sedesa falls into a contradiction with all other national and international health authorities. This fact has caused a strong discussion in the medical community by stating that it is not only a waste of resources but that the most affected are the patients.
