The idea of underworldthat place where souls arrive after the death of a person, is one that we have rooted in Mexico thanks to the Mesoamerican civilizations that inhabited the national territory hundreds of years ago, including the Zapoteca culture that had its settlement in the states of Guerrero, Puebla, Oaxaca and Veracruz, and of which scientists seem to have found the entrance to his world of deadas suggested by an article published by the Association for Archaeological Research and Exploration.
It was thanks to Lyobaa project as researchers of National Institute of History and Anthropology of Mexico (INAH), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Association for Archaeological Research and ExplorationProyecto ARX, AC, obtained what could be the location of the entrance to the underworld of the Zapotecs, which would be under a church.
To reach this conclusion, the experts involved in the project used three geophysical methods to scan the visited site, including ground penetrating radar, as well as seismic noise and electrical resistivity tomography. After the use of these methods, the results and images provided provided a 3D model that showed what was under the ground, information that has already been delivered to the Archeology Council of the INAH.
But what did the methods used by specialists reveal? According to the article, underground tunnels and chambers were found under a churchplace where colonial documents, as well as local tradition affirm that the entrance to the great temple of Lyobaahe zapotec underworld.
The investigation also showed evidence of a stage before the construction of a place called Palacio de las Columnas, one of the most important monuments in mitlacoupled with some geophysical anomalies that could be interpreted as archaeological structures or tombs that are still buried.
Where is the entrance to Lyobaa, the Zapotec underworld?
According to the study carried out by members of the three aforementioned institutions, the entrance to the zapotec underworldalso know as Lyobaawould be under the Church Group of the archaeological site of Mitla, in the state of Oaxaca, a place where, thanks to the technology used, evidence of a system of caves and passageways was discovered.
To verify what the local tradition indicates about this place, the researchers reviewed the courtyards and groups of structures around the church were investigated with the help of said geophysical methods.
After this work, the existence of a large void was confirmed just below the main altar of the church, which extended in a northwest and west direction. On the other hand, the arrangement of chambers and tunnels under the church showed much greater articulation under the Group of Columns, in addition to regular anomalies in the Patio de las Columnas, suggesting the possible existence of earlier archaeological structures.
According to the scientists who participated in this project and who marks what could be the entrance to the zapotec underworld is that these findings will help not only to better understand a Mesoamerican civilization, but also to rewrite the history of the origins of mitlanot to mention the information it provides for the prevention of seismic risks.
