In the educational field of Peruthe Education, Youth and Sports Commission of the Congress of the republic has taken an important step by accepting the opinion of two bills. These projects focus on the modification of article 36 of Law 28044, also known as the General Education Law. The main objective of these changes is to redefine the ages for enrollment in educational institutions, specifically at the initial and primary education levels.
In essence, these modifications aim to adjust the enrollment age of students, particularly at the initial levels of education. Until now, in Peru, the deadline for children’s enrollment was March 31 of each year.
From what age can children be enrolled?
However, the new bills propose a change in this date, considering the chronological age of children as of May 31 of each school year as the criterion for enrollment. This means that children of 3, 4 and 5 years old who enter the initial level and those who are about to enter the first grade of primary school must be enrolled according to their chronological age on that date.
The Education Commission has argued that this amendment aims to allow children to enter education with greater emotional and cognitive maturity, which could benefit their learning process.
It is important to highlight that this proposal must be approved by the Plenary Session of Congress with at least 66 votes in favor for it to come into effect in the next school year, that is, in 2024. This change in the enrollment age could have a significant impact on thousands of Peruvian families, since it would modify the deadlines to enroll their children in the educational system.
In addition, it is intended that children who turn six years old before May 31 have the possibility of enrolling in the first grade of primary school, as long as they meet this requirement. On the other hand, if a child turns six years old after May 31, she must wait until the next school year to enroll in that grade.
What other changes has Minedu proposed?
In addition to the changes in enrollment, the Ministry of Education (Minedu) has announced the incorporation of four new courses in the national basic education curriculum starting in the 2024 school year. These courses focus on areas important for the development of students and their preparation for the world of work. The new courses include:
- Financial and tax education
- Accounting
- Economy
- Consumer rights
With the purpose of raising the quality of education and equipping Peruvian students with the essential tools to address the challenges of the world of work and society as a whole, Law No. 31900 has been approved in the Congress of Peru. This legislation establishes that at all educational levels, students in the country must follow a series of new subjects.
The responsibility for implementing this provision falls on the Ministry of Education (Minedu), in accordance with its powers and powers. These changes in Peru’s educational system represent significant progress towards a more complete and relevant education for young Peruvians, along with the modification in the enrollment age and the incorporation of new courses.
