Even though the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 They began on Wednesday, the official inauguration took place this Friday, October 20 at the National Stadium of Chile. Although lovers of different disciplines eagerly await the presentation of their favorite athletes, they are also aware of the medal table. For this reason, in the following paragraphs we will let you know all the details and how the table goes according to the participating country.
It is necessary to mention that each medal that hangs around the neck of an athlete at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games will be unique, not only because of what it means to the athlete but because its creation was an artisanal process that means that no two medals are the same. ”Each medal is different from the other, because they are made one by one with an artisanal process of patina or oxidation. There are no equal medals”explained Verónica Lobos, head of the Brand, Identity and Image area of the Games and in charge of the project.
Coming from the bowels of the Chilean territory, from the Atacama Desert, all the medals have a copper heart and are crowned by a Mapuche ornament, the trapelacucha, which is a pin needle that symbolizes the union between man and woman.
Chile being the largest producer of copper in the world, made this metal the main component and the Chilean company Antofagasta Minerals was the main supplier. For this reason, Santiago 2023 are the first Games that will use copper as a base for the preparation of the awards, since in Toronto 2015, although it was used, it was only for the bronze medals.
The medals have a weight of 280 grams, a diameter of 10 centimeters and a thickness of 8 millimeters. The center and the ribbon are turquoise, while on the front and back there are elements that symbolize different territories of Chile such as the Andes mountain range, the condor, the Santiago funiculars and the pehuén or araucaria, which is a tree typical of the south of the southern country and its original culture.
In the Pan American Games a total of 2,986 medals will be distributed, of which 947 are gold, 947 silver and 1,092 bronze. Be careful, the Parapan American medals have the same construction, but they differ in that the center and the quote have a blue tone and the legend “Santiago 2023” is written in Braille.
