Until now, García Ascencio was general director of the company in Mexico and will occupy the position of head of country, thus becoming the head of the financial group in the countryas reported by the Spanish company in a statement.
The company’s board of directors also decided that Héctor Grisi, who was previously the boss in Mexico, takes the place of José Antonio Álvarez as CEO of Banco Santander.
“It is a privilege to assume the leadership of Santander Mexico. I am convinced that we have the talent to continue growing and place Santander at a new level,” said the new head of the bank in the North American country, according to a statement.
In addition, he verbalized his desire to “continue building a bank that stands out from its competition due to its proximity to customers and product innovation, solidity and responsible banking“.
García Ascencio has a degree in Economics from the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and a master’s degree in the same subject from the London School of Economics (LSE), in addition to having 25 years of professional experience in banking at companies such as Credit Suisse and Goldman. Sachs.
“The great work carried out by Héctor in recent years places Santander México in an enviable position to continue growing, now under the leadership of Felipe”, stated the president of Santander, Ana Botín.
He also highlighted García Asencio’s preparation to assume “the maximum responsibility for the business of the country” and said he trusts that he will do “a great job”.
“During my recent visit to Mexico last November, I was able to reaffirm my confidence that Mexico is one of the most dynamic markets and with the greatest potential in the group,” he added.
Santander México, according to the document, obtained an ordinary profit of 874 million euros (929.3 million dollars) in the first nine months of 2022, making it one of the main markets of the company outside of Spain.
