- During the study, the vital signs of the patients will be analyzed, such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, sleep pattern and electrocardiogram.
- Data will also be measured and collected from patients with heart disease in the preoperative and postoperative periods of cardiovascular surgery.
- If the results are favorable, this smartwatch could be consolidated as the best of its kind for people with heart disease.
Over the past few years there has been a growing interest from technology leaders in health. From Apple to Microsoft they have specific divisions focused on the health field. While now unveiled a new smartwatch that would be very useful for patients with heart disease, do you know what it is?
This is Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4. It is one of the most advanced of the company and one of its best bets to compete with the Apple Watch, which has even been classified as a medical device.
Regarding the features of this smart watch, on the right side it has two buttons that also function as sensors for the ECG function and body mass index.
But now the interesting thing is that Samsung and the Heart Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (InCor) signed an association. The objective is to identify if this smartwatch can work in heart disease monitoring.
Other aspects to be investigated
To verify its usefulness, a study with an initial duration of 14 months. The partnership aims to develop an assisted digital telemonitoring platform and these smart watches will measure and collect data from patients with heart disease in the preoperative and postoperative periods of cardiovascular surgery.
The study will analyze the vital signs of the patients, such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, sleep pattern and electrocardiogram. In this way, it will be possible to monitor patients in relation to treatment, identifying risks and allowing early interventions in the event of any relevant change, thus avoiding more serious complications.
The signing of the agreement includes the use of a digital monitoring platform that will be developed and integrated by a team from InCor’s IT service, with the support of the innovation team (InovaInCor) and a clinical team from the Institute.
Functions you can already perform
For its part, the Galaxy Watch 4 is the latest model from Samsung that allows users to monitor their own blood pressure. In fact, you can also detect an irregular heartbeat through an EKG.
The device also allows monitoring of oxygen saturation, heart rate and sleep quality. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 features a sensor for bioimpedance body composition assessment, a test that provides a deeper understanding of the wearer’s overall health and fitness, with important measurements such as skeletal muscle , basal metabolic rate, body water, and body fat percentage.
For now, in addition to all the features mentioned this smartwatch would help in monitoring heart disease patients. If the results of the study are satisfactory, then it could become the best device of its kind today.
