Samsung would be preparing its own glasses augmented reality, which would compete with the Apple Vision Pro, from the company with the bitten apple. Korean media report that the electronics company joined forces with Google and Qualcomm to manufacture an independent device with its own chipset and integrated system.
The new initiative is far from resembling the Samsung Odyssey VR. The company wants to manufacture an augmented reality (AR) device capable of dealing with what Apple recently announced with the Visio Pro and its powerful Apple M2, review The Computer Bug.
The Korean site Joon Gang reports that these glasses will be announced at the Unpack event, which is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
It is said that the patents for each of the elements are already licensed. And what is coming now is to begin developing prototypes, testing, adjusting and offering a final product that will convince South Korean executives to launch.
Samsung Electronics has specifically licensed the following patents: OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) and core technology of the XR microdisplay.
OLEDoS is a technology that bonds organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials to silicon wafers instead of glass substrates. So, that gives rise to thinking that Samsung only has to put together parts to join the augmented reality glasses market.
“We plan to strengthen advanced research and development and investment in XR, digital health and digital wallet,” a Samsung insider told the Korean website.
When saying XR is, specialists speak of a concept that encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) technologies. Two brands are immersed in this market: Meta, with the Meta Quest 3 and Apple with the Apple Vision Pro.
