If something has become clear to us this year 2023, it is that Samsung has positioned itself as a mandatory reference in the increasingly competitive market for smartphones with folding screens.
Consumers are virtually halfway through the product’s commercial life cycle. Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. But rumors have already begun to circulate about what could come for future generations.
There we have the example of the supposed compartment for the S Pen stylus that, in theory, would finally be integrated into the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Yes, it is an adjustment that is as sensible as it is necessary, but at the moment it is nothing more than a rumor.
In that same parameter, weeks ago the report had begun to circulate without much basis that the company would finally be preparing a folding screen smartphone with a much more affordable price.
This represented great news for potential consumers, since both the Galazy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip families are relatively expensive due to the integrated technology.
Unfortunately, today everything is being denied.
Samsung is not preparing a much cheaper Galaxy Z Fold
Before getting to the sad news, a little context is essential. It all started with a report from TrendForce, where it was suggested that Samsung could be developing a low-cost folding smartphone to launch in 2024.
This source has a relatively reliable history of leaks that end up being confirmed as true. So many media outlets spread the rumor without further supporting precedent.
But now, a Samsung spokesperson has spoken directly to the local newspaper Korea JoongAng Dailywhere they end up dynamiting everything once and for all:
“We are not planning to make foldable smartphones with a mid-range price, those recent rumors are totally unfounded.”
While it is true that Samsung has been successful with its mid-range and mid/low-range Galaxy A family phones. It seems that it is not in their short-term plans to launch a new foldable line that emulates the current diversification in their family of conventional smartphones.
Due to current technological requirements and production costs, there is a tangible possibility that Samsung does not have the capacity to produce mid-range folding phones with the same standards of durability and quality that distinguish them.
So we won’t have a cheaper Samsung Galaxy Z Fold this 2024. But maybe we will in a few years.
