In the last arcs of One-Punch Man, we had seen how Garou has become exponentially stronger through many fights, sacrifices and the loss of his humanity, to the point of wanting to be called “Monster”, but Chapter 159 of the manga it reminds him of who he should have been chasing all along. It should be noted that the following article contains spoilers for One-Punch Man Chapter 159, “Source of Anxiety”, by One, Yusuke Murata, John Werry and James Gaubatz, available on Viz Media and other means.
The history of this anti-villain dates back to the beginning of the series, when Saitama was just beginning to show his power, Garou was first introduced in One-Punch Man, he was already a strong human who could easily defeat Class B heroes. and dozens of criminals. His strength reached higher levels after clashing with the S-Class heroes, and even more so when he turned into a monster. Although he initially lost consciousness and sentience after his transformation, he eventually regained his humanity and perfected his own martial art form that surpasses that of his master. Even so, Garou falls far short of being the most powerful in the series.
After demonstrating how strong he had become by splitting Centisennin in two with a single blow of his hand, a detail reminiscent of Saitama’s final blow in One-Punch Man, Garou assessed his current position within this universe. He believed that the S-Class heroes who were eliminated and had not yet appeared in his presence, were out for the count and had no one else to stop him from realizing his dream of becoming the strongest in the entire universe. Despite knowing this, he felt that he had missed something important, and as we well know, he did..
When Saitama went towards him, Garou couldn’t recognize the hero. He thought that he was a low-level hero who was trying to help others in some way, but when the bald hero asked him who he was, he replied that he was a monster that would bring despair to all mankind. However, Saitama did not believe him when he saw Garou kill Centisennin and save the helicopter full of humans. He ignored the “anti-villain’s” chatter and turned to go in search of his next matchup, saying there was nothing to be done since he didn’t really look like a monster.. Angered by this attitude, Garou launched a sneak attack, only to be blown away with a single blow.
The disappointing fight between Garou and Saitama in One-Punch Man
Now, we know that “the running joke” in One-Punch Man has been to show that Saitama doesn’t require more confrontation, more shonen-magazine babble, or anything like that: You only need one hit to defeat your enemies. Nevertheless, a part of his fans has felt that this was disappointingbecause it seemed that the work was going to take an unexpected turn. It seems that a group of the fandom is getting tired of this trope.
Saitama sending Garou flying reminded him of his previous encounters with the hero, and he realized that the group he should have been fighting all along wasn’t the S-Class heroes or monsters, it was Saitama, who has defeated him. repeatedly like this. This may be the start of another arc of growth in the play or Garou finally accepting his place on the power ladder. Clearly, the hero hunter is still inferior to our beloved protagonist, but it is also true that Garou improves faster the stronger his enemy is, including Saitama himself. It won’t be surprising to see him have another power surge or two during his next fight with Saitama, though it’s highly doubtful that he can, or ever will, defeat One-Punch Man’s main hero.
In the end, Garou may have come a long way, but there are still existences like Saitama who are above him. His understanding of this hero’s identity will certainly lead him to challenge the hero, which will consequently result in the most anticipated fight so far in One-Punch Man and let’s hope he doesn’t resort to his common joke.
