The organization SAG-AFTRArecognized for representing voice and motion capture talent in various forms of entertainment, has taken a significant step by voting overwhelmingly in favor of a possible strike in the video game industry.
With an impressive majority of 98.32% in supportthis move appears to be inevitable as the organization seeks to improve the working conditions of its members, who have faced numerous challenges in the industry.
As you remember 3D Games, SAG-AFTRA already made history in Hollywood with a previous strike that had a considerable impact on multiple film projects, some of which were on the verge of cancellation. Now, the organization is preparing to carry out similar actions in the field of video games, where voice and motion capture actors play a crucial role in creating immersive experiences for players.
Fran Drescher, leader of SAG-AFTRA, stated: “It’s time for video game companies to stop playing with us and come to an agreement. The result of this vote demonstrates that our members understand the nature of these negotiations, and the time has come for these studios to reach an agreement with our actors, who continue to provide their talents in the video game industry”
The companies mentioned
Companies highlighted in the statement, such as Epic Games, Electronic Arts and Insomniac Gameshave been singled out as part of the problem due to their refusal to adequately address the employment concerns of voice and motion capture actors.
If this strike materializes, the video game industry will suffer an immediate impact. Numerous projects in development will be paralyzed, and although the extent of this paralysis will vary depending on the company, it is undeniable that the industry as a whole will experience significant delays, something that has already been experienced in the past due to the pandemic.
While no one wants to see projects stopped or delayed, the strike represents an effort to ensure that the actors who bring iconic characters to life in video games receive the fair treatment and proper working conditions they deserve.
