For more than a year and a half, the world has been in the midst of a severe health crisis that has already left more than 4.51 million fatalities. While there are 217 million infected, although the figure keeps increasing daily. But despite the fact that anyone can be infected, the risk of developing severe Covid-19 is different in patients.
In this sense, at the beginning of the pandemic, it became known that obesity, diabetes and hypertension were the main risk factors that increased the intensity of the disease.
The foregoing is based on the fact that, at least during the first months, those who were most exposed were the elderly and people with chronic diseases. All this because your immune system is weakened.
As time has passed, the panorama has changed due to the start of mass vaccination. From then on the risk groups have been modified and Covid-19 cases are increasingly occurring in younger people.
The reasons for this are not only limited to the fact that people in this group do not have immunization. It also influences that they are those who have resumed their academic and professional activities. By doing so, they are exposed and more likely to catch it.
What increases the risk in the youngest?
For this reason, Houston Methodist Research Institute conducted research on the subject. It consisted of analyzing 1,853 people between the ages of 18 and 29 who were hospitalized for severe Covid-19.
Although at the beginning of the pandemic it was believed that the youngest were not infected or only had mild symptoms of the disease, it is now known that this is not the case. When analyzing all the cases, it was identified that for this sector of the population the main risk factors have changed slightly and are the following:
- Obesity.
- Overweight.
- History of asthma.
- Heart failure,
- Signs of cerebrovascular disease.
- Diabetes.
On the other hand, the research mentions that of the total of young people analyzed, eight percent developed additional serious problems due to Covid-19. The main problems reported were myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular event, cardiac arrest, pulmonary embolism and thrombosis.
At the end of the day, what the work makes clear is that everyone is at risk until they receive the vaccine. In many countries its application is still authorized in minors but it must also be taken into account that there are young people who no longer follow the recommended hygiene and protection measures. Not only do they expose themselves to disobey, but they affect their entire environment.
