The Last of Us continues with its first season premiere schedule, releasing a new episode every week. In the case of chapter five, entitled Endure and Survive, an unusual measure was applied, advancing the episode so as not to cross its transmission with that of the 2023 Super Bowl.
Thanks to this the episode was available to watch from the past Friday February 10, 2023. But, faithful to the already imposed tradition, we decided to leave this comparative summary for its usual Wednesday.
Since to a large extent crucial issues of the plot are addressed and the text is essentially made up of spoilers, so that its reading is much more comfortable if you have already seen the respective chapter.
The series itself has not been without controversy, either among purists who wanted an adaptation based on the original story of the video game, or those who express relative discomfort towards some winks or inclusion movements that have been integrated to enrich the plot. .
However, in general, each new installment of this season has turned out to be much more complex and robust than the vast majority expected.
The main differences between the video game and episode 5 of The Last of Us
This chapter addresses a crucial moment in the game’s original plot with the integration of two characters that leave a deep mark on the odyssey of our protagonists: Henry and Sam.
From the previous chapter it was perceived that they would give much more depth and context to this duo of brothers and the group of Los Cazadores, interconnecting their circumstance with Kathleen’s search for revenge. Today we finally understand why.
In the game Henry and Sam are just a couple of brothers trying to escape Pittsburgh when they run into Joel and Ellie. Here we find out that Kathleen is after Henry because he sold his brother, leader of the resistance, to Phaedra. All in order to get medicines against leukemia that little Sam suffers.
Nothing like that happens in the game, the Hunters had just killed everyone with the brothers, but the addition of these facts bolsters everything to make it more solid. Similarly, Sam is not deaf in the game and interactions with Ellie are therefore verbal and more effusive. However, this change helps the plot to change the rhythm and deepen the bond between the four characters.
The underground escape plan happens almost the same as in the game, but in the PlayStation title everything happens during the day. The sniper scene is one of the moments of greatest tension and action of the entire experience and when the person shooting the rifle arrives there is a confrontation as the attacker tries to stab Joel.
In the game Joel also clears the way for Ellie, Sam and Henry who are in the distance. But there it happens one day, first you dispatch the entire command of Los Cazadores and immediately the horde of infected arrives, where Sam is bitten while shooting with the rifle.
In the PlayStation title, the Bloater or Gordinflón makes his appearance hours before, when we meet Bill on the tour of the school gym. Sam and Henry never come across this abomination.
Sam hides his bite and until the next morning when Ellie enters his room to wake him up is when everyone discovers at the same time that he was infecting, ending all the same with the death of the brothers.
In the game Ellie sees Sam’s bite and tries to heal him with her blood to no avail, which adds a much more dramatic tone to everything.
The sixth episode aims to become the prelude to another even more intense passage.
