We had the opportunity to attend the preview of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One And we’ll be honest: We never thought we’d end up reviewing this movie on your tech-focused site like it is. FayerWayer.
But the surprising reality is that this film, which we are advancing to you, well It could be considered the best of the series.ends up proposing an extraordinarily valid plot, where the central point of the conflict and the maximum fear is the excessive advance of technology and our dependence on it.
The script for this tape was written years ago, even its filming was interrupted on more than one occasion by the Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic. In other words, it is a script that was conceived a long time ago.
However, it is absolutely impressive how the core part of its plot focuses on debates that we have all experienced in recent months with the release of generative platforms based on Artificial Intelligence such as ChatGPT, Midjourney and Google Bard.
We live in a curious moment in the history of humanity and of technology in general. It is clearly perceived that we are entering a new era, where websites and social networks become almost obsolete things of the past at an inconceivable speed.
All at the same time that it exists high uncertainty about what the future holds for us in personal and even work matters, while we discover the real weight that these new technologies will have, which for the first time is felt that they could be far superior to humans and potentially uncontrollable.
Mission: Impossible – Deadly Judgment Part 1 is an ode to cinema to save theaters against digital technologies
The promotional campaign of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (Mission: Impossible – Deadly Judgment Part 1 in Latin America) has been extraordinarily careful in its promotional material and its progress with respect to showing us what the new enemy is. It’s there in plain sight every trailerbut it is never addressed directly.
If you have read between the lines of the opening paragraphs of this text, you will be able to guess which entity now represents the new threat. So miraculously the story of this action film becomes a vivid reflection of our contemporary uncertainties.
But that is not its greatest virtue. The dialogues and dissertations on the subject are extraordinary and memorable in many sequences that may well constitute an example of good writing.
But they are one more component of a complex puzzle where we find brutal action sequences, filmed as the old school brand, with real stunts and without relying on the excessive use of CGI.
All seasoned with very unexpected nods to other productions, such as the first film in this franchise, directed by Brian DePalmaas well as the most epic set-pieces of the video game sagas of Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid, there is even a tribute to Lupine III.
All this as pieces of a complex and essential work to see in a movie theater, preferably in IMAX. Where the main reflection is the dependence that we already have today on technology and the implications of how this tendency to resort so much to its use could manipulate us or complicate our existence.
At the same time Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (Mission: Impossible – Deadly Judgment Part 1) works as an ode to the value of cinema as an art and a community experience. A show that must be experienced as a group in a movie theater and not isolated on a streaming platform.
In other words Tom Cruise is willing to literally kill himself in order to save the movie industry as we knew it before the existence of Netflix.
And you are right to do so.
