Nothing has made me happier than doing this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge review. This game has been a wonderful throwback to when I was a kid and spent a lot of my free time playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time on the SNES. For someone who grew up playing video games in the ’90s, side-scrolling beat ’em ups are like home you come back to for comfort.
The launch a few years ago of Streets of Rage 4 reinvigorated the beat ’em ups formula through modernized controls, visual and quality of life improvements. Also the return of Scott Pilgrim vs The World Game contributed to renew the importance of the genre. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a tribute to the past that embraces contemporary gameplay.
Review of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
To carry out this analysis of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, the version of the game for Xbox Series X was used, a version of which I have no complaints in technical terms. Tribute Games managed to create a beat ’em up that represents the essence of retro but at the same time modernizes it. In the game, you’ll choose from a cast of seven iconic characters from the Mutant Turtles universe, fighting through a series of linear levels that end with a boss.
You will have destructible stages and all the enemies of the classic games. But you will not play like in the previous games. Instead, the combat is vastly superior, which would be expected for a current game. In addition, you have new mechanics such as dodging, reviving allies, among others. If something impressed me when doing this analysis of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, it is that this game takes up the bases of the formula of the genre and of the previous TMNT gamesbut perfecting them.

game modes
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge features two main game modes. The Story mode has more than 15 levels of the game that you will find in a world through which you can move, redo levels, etc. Additionally, you’ll be tasked with optional side quests that mostly consist of finding collectibles. Arcade mode reduces experience to its linear progression. If what you want is a fast and fun game, Shredder’s Revenge is what you are looking for.
You can complete the Story mode in less than two hours, including all the collectible-based side quests. But there is also more game for those who really want to spend their time with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A fairly simplified progression system for individual characters and stage-specific challenges offer good replayability.
Retro also looks amazing and sounds good
It is clear that if we are going to highlight something from Shredder’s Revenge it will be the incredible fluidity of combat due to the good variety of attack types and abilities, or the fact that each of the seven characters boasts unique attacks that present a sure distinction between playable characters. It must also be said that the visual effects are full of details and a few references to the past that do not go unnoticed.
They use 16-bit pixel art to create carefully constructed character models and robust animations. The scenarios, however, are what most attract the attention of the graphic aspect. And not only in this. If I were to compare Shredder’s Revenge to Scott Pilgrim, I would say that I found the levels in this game to be better designed overall and that I enjoyed it much more. There is little not to like about how this game looks. In addition to how it looks, we can also speak highly of how it sounds.

Shredder’s Revenge features a soundtrack as nostalgic as it is charming. The importance of music in this game is clear from the start. The music created from 8bits, plus a mix of hip hop and power metal will make you feel part of this universe, with colorful enemies and the fantastic Ninja Turtles.
You will not be alone: the multiplayer
If what you like is playing with friends (or strangers), the multiplayer-centric mechanics of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will interest you. With a multiplayer up to 6 playerss, you can wreak havoc with an unstoppable wall of turtle force with your friends. Multiplayer-focused mechanics, revives, health sharing, and team attacks are things you’re going to like from the start.
And best of all, you can play both with friends on your console, with friends online, and with unknown people who will join your game with the matchmaker used by the game, with a drop-in, drop-out system. I know that the game initially had some issues with matchmaking with friends, and some still report it, but I didn’t have this issue.
conclusion
For fans of beat ’em ups from both the 90s and todayTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a game you’ll want to play. It is not only for fans of turtles, nor for those like me, who played Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time. No. It is a game for everyone who enjoys the genre. Compared to the formula of past games in the franchise, this one has been refined and updated effectively to appeal to today’s gamers.
The retro-inspired music and visual presentation excellently represent an era of gaming. And players unfamiliar with this genre will find themselves with a game that is genuinely fun to play. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a refreshing retro game full of fan service, fun gameplay, action packed. And yes, you can play it on Xbox Game Pass. So you should have it already installed.
Between the only criticisms for the game would be the short length of the story mode, which is not in itself a problem, but some may be disappointed. Or the connection problems that some have experienced, as I was able to review among the people who think in the community, but that I have not experienced myself.
