The policy was implemented with the aim of preventing the transmission of harmful content and abuse on the platform.
YouTube restricts creators based on how many subscribers they have.
While it seems to limit smaller creators, it also invites the audience to subscribe to grow their audience.
Since September 2021, YouTube has implemented a policy that restricts for security the subscribers who broadcast live through the smartphones and is related to the number of viewers they can have during broadcasts.
Since its launch in 2005 and its acquisition by Google in 2006, the world’s largest video platform has not stopped growing thanks to the creation of content that is generated by the estimated 2.1 billion users in 2020 , where you can see everything from videos, music to educational videos.
To measure its reach, in 2021, the platform application was downloaded more than 5.2 million times from the Google Play Store and almost 1.5 million from Apple, they indicate Statistical data.
And in 2019, global user spending on the platform totaled more than $562 million.
Does YouTube prioritize big creators or boost emerging ones?
With the new YouTube policy, users will have to meet the following requirements to broadcast live on mobile devices in order for the platform to be safe in its community: have a minimum of 50 subscribers, have no restrictions to broadcast live the last 90 days on the channel, verify the channel, enable and wait 24 hours to start streaming, and have a device running Android 5.0 or later.
For subscribers with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, YouTube limits the number of users of live streams and privately archived streams.
When users, viewers, want to view the content of a small channel, YouTube prevents the content from being viewed by means of a message:
“Video not available. This video is popular! Due to the limited history of the creator, we are limiting the number of viewers. Please subscribe to this channel to help this creator reach a larger audience.”
On the one hand, YouTube limits the audience of small and emerging creators, but not everything is so bad, it also encourages them to subscribe to increase their audience range.
And for creators who have more than a thousand subscribers, the platform removes the limitation on the public and if the subscribers ever drop, users will lose access to live broadcasts.
“To help smaller aspiring creators, while preventing the abuse of mobile live streaming, we have created security measures to limit the spread of potentially harmful content. If a channel has fewer than a thousand subscribers, we limit the number of viewers on live broadcasts, from mobiles, ”says YouTube.
The policy is intended to protect the community from potentially harmful content and prevent abuse on the platform; however, another of its scope is to prevent the transmission of content protected by copyright.
It is worth mentioning that YouTube will increase the price of its family plan in order to develop more functions, support artists, and also the creators of the platform.
