The Apex Legends player community has a large number of surprises that have been incorporated in recent seasons of the popular battle royale video game, and crossovers between video game titles have become more common than ever in 2022.
Something that seems quite striking to us is that, thanks to the growth boom of some other battle royale video games such as Fortnite. It’s not uncommon to see developers sharing their IP, bringing old favorites to life in new universes.
Respawn has done a crossover in the past with streetwear brand Market (formerly Chinatown Market), incorporating some over-the-top cosmetics into the game. It was pretty well received by players, and that got the developers thinking about what the future holds for Apex Legends crossovers.
“When we have our mid-season events and stuff like that, we treat it like a costume party where we can break away from the core fantasies that we’ve been developing for a Legend,” game director Steven Ferreira told The Washington. Post.
“We like that freedom because it’s a way to freshen things up for the players, but also for the team. “I think there are opportunities how we can do that in terms of crossovers with other universes in some way. So I think you’ll see some of that coming, and you’ll see some things continue to expand in terms of our partnerships on that side.”
However, despite the interest in bringing more crossovers to Apex Games, Respawn doesn’t want to do so at the cost of the game’s core story. The developers don’t necessarily want to go ‘full Fortnite’ with major crossovers every week, but rather continue to explore the Apex universe with the base characters as intended.
“One of the things that has grown in the last three years has been the universe that we have created. And one of the things that probably surprised us and that we’ve leaned on since the game’s launch has been how much players care about the universe and the stories we tell,” Ferreira explained. “Finding more ways to expand that will always be the main concern.”
