WHO leads the collective “United against Rabies” to achieve the goal “No human deaths from rabies by 2030”.
According to the WHO, 40% of people bitten by an animal suspected of having rabies are children under 15 years of age.
Three minors were admitted to the “Aurelio Valdivieso” Civil Hospital in Oaxaca de Juárez on December 26 because they were bitten by a wild animal. Yesterday the government of Oaxaca in a statement on its twitter account reported the death of a 7-year-old male minor due to complications from a possible unconfirmed rabies infection from a bat bite.
According to an official statement from the Oaxaca Ministry of Health, the suspicion of possible contagion of rabies by bat bites in minors took place in the community of Palo de Lima, Oaxaca. Therefore, the case was immediately attended to by health personnel from state and federal agencies.
In addition, the Secretary of Health, Alma Lilia Velasco Hernández, reported that two of the three cases of minors were in a critical state of health. Likewise, the official commented that the minors live in a community of extreme marginality as a result of the lack of attention from previous governments.
