All drivers must renew their driving license sooner or later, since it has a limited validity period. To do so, you have two options and we will tell you what each of them consists of.
Not all driving licenses issued by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) have the same validity period. The most common, the B license with which you can drive cars, expires after 10 years as long as the owner is under 65 years of age. After this age, renewal must be done every 5 years.
With regard to C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D and D+E cards, these have a period of validity of 5 years while its holder does not reach 65 years of age. Once he has done it, he will have to renew it every 3 years.
And, although there is no legal age from which driving is prohibited, the truth is that renewing the license does not only consist of requesting it. It’s a bit more complicated than that.
How to renew your driving license
To renew the driving license it is necessary to prove that the driver maintains the physical and psychological aptitudes necessary for it. As you already know, this must be done through a psychotechnical exam to be carried out in one of the Medical Examination Centers authorized by the DGT, which you can consult here.
In reality, no more is needed, although the processing of the new driving license can be done through two different channels: through the same recognition center where you have passed the psycho-technical exam or yourself at the DGT.
Regardless of the option chosen, you should know that:
- The psychotechnical aptitude report expires after 90 days business of its expedition
- The validity period of the new permit it depends on your age and the type of permit
- It is possible to present the application for the renewal of the license up to 3 months before that it expires
- The period of validity of the new card starts when the old one expires, not when you apply
- You can renew an expired cardbut you can’t drive while you have the expired one.
- If you have a Spanish driving license, but you reside in another country of the European Unionyou must renew the license there.
- If you have foreign driver’s license of the EU or EEA and you reside in Spain, you must renew it here.
Renew the driver’s license at the DGT
If you have decided to renew the license on your own instead of delegating the process to the Driver Recognition Center, you can do it in two ways:
- In person at any Traffic Headquarters or Office
- Online, through the Electronic Registry of the DGT

Also, you should know that several documents will be required: official application form, psychophysical aptitude report issued by the Driver Recognition Center, proof of purchase of the corresponding fee and original 32×26 mm color photograph with a plain background.
How much does it cost to renew a driver’s license?
The General Directorate of Traffic establishes fixed prices for the cost of the driving license renewal process, although at this amount the Driver Recognition Centers they can add a surcharge for the psycho-technical report and procedures.
To renew the driver’s license at the DGT, it is necessary buy rate 4.3, which has a cost of €24.58except for those over 70 years of age, for whom the procedure is free.
In addition, if for medical reasons it is necessary to renew the card for a period shorter than that established, the rates and prices will be as follows:
- Up to 4 years: rate 4.3.4 of 19.67 euros
- Up to 3 years: rate 4.3.3 of 14.75 euros
- Up to 2 years: rate 4.3.2 of 9.83 euros
- up to 1 year: 4.3.1 rate of 4.92 euros
Remember! It is not necessary to wait for the driver’s license to expire, avoid problems by starting the process from 3 months prior to the expiration date of the current license.
