It seems that Face ID is going to make the leap, and after being implemented on the iPhone and iPad, the Macs will also be able to use it. We have been able to find out thanks to references to this facial recognition system that have been found in the beta versions of macOS Big Sur, the new version that was presented at WWDC 2020. Considering that Face ID can even be used to identify you on websites, it makes a lot of sense to install it on a Mac too, especially now that they are going to use an in-house ARM processor like the iPad or iPhone do. Integrating things like Face ID now is much easier and faster than before.
The extension found in macOS refers to the name PearlCamera, which is the code that Apple used internally when Face ID was being developed. With this extension in the system, it is practically confirmed that the next MacBook with Apple Silicon (Apple’s own processor) will very surely have a set of TrueDepth and Face ID sensors from day one.
As of today, Touch ID is implemented on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, but Face ID has never been released from iOS devices. Having Face ID on a MacBook would allow it to be opened and before we could realize it, it would be unlocked, without the need to type a key as most Mac users have been doing for decades, at least all those who do not have a T2 security chip and Fingerprint sensor for Touch ID on your keyboard.
