He adapted the original novel with Ted Malawer (Halston). Thanks to his Puerto Rican ancestry, Lopez was immediately drawn to this film (via G.Q.):
“As a Puerto Rican queer, I have never encountered a character like Alex Claremont-Díaz before. And I’ve never read a romantic comedy like this. It was a new kind of fairy tale. I could feel that this book had the potential to be one of those great romantic comedies if it was adapted well.”
Why is it worth giving it a try?
Beyond his gender and the team behind him, Red, white and blue blood promises to be a film that embraces diversity. And, in turn, everything that makes us different. It not only shows a love story between two men, but also a United States under the government of a woman, and the Mexican roots of a large part of the presidential family. Everything is handled with great respect and absolute naturalness.
Although the adaptation has undergone certain changes, especially the disappearance of some characters and passages, the actors affirm that the essence of the characters is there. Feelings, his doubts and arches moved, according to his words, in a way. This commented Taylor Zakhar Perez, who gives life to Alex (via Newsweek):
“I really didn’t know the magnitude of the book. Everyone turned to me with their opinions. I feel like there are going to be people everywhere waiting for a great adaptation. And it all falls on me because it’s Alex’s movie, his journey. And it was up to me to make it all happen. Seeing the diversity of fans that have reached out to me makes me think that this will transcend everything.”
