Last Thursday, January 27, the first same-sex marriage took place between two natives of the Rarámuri ethnic group in Chihuahua. The couple was accompanied by godparents and witnesses, Carlos Eduardo Lara González, 18, and Rogelio Aguirre López, 20, appeared at the Civil Registry where they impacted their signature on the certificate and made their marriage official.
Carlos and Rogelio met through Facebook and began to meet through that medium until they met in person. The idea of formalizing their union was already five months old.
The couple of men are residents of the city of Chihuahua. Where Rogelio is studying Law and for his part Carlos works as a nurse in a local institution.
The newlyweds commented that they received various criticisms from the Rarámuri or Tarahumara nation as we commonly know them. Although part of the criticism focused on their sexual orientation, according to the spouses, many of the accusations against them were for not wearing traditional Rarámuri clothing correctly.

The couple added that homosexual relationships between its members are not usual within their culture.
“Let it be a turning point to invite and motivate them so that if they really love each other, they make it known to the whole world, since love is universal,” commented Carlos and Rogelio, who stressed that with this act give visibility to LGBT people from the majority ethnic group of Chihuahua.
