Social network users grew by 227 million over the past year.
In 2022, a total of 4.7 billion people will be registered in these spaces.
In a world that is increasingly digital and connected by technology, especially through social networks, many people have found help, jobs, among other things on these platforms. It is the story of a tiktoker who helped raise 170,000 dollars (around 3,400,000 Mexican pesos) for an elderly Walmart employee so that he could pay off his mortgage, but he did not expect that the good deed would put him in problems.
The internet is one of the media most consumed by people today, so finding any type of information in these media is not unusual. That is why donating money to social causes is an increasingly common and important practice for many people around the world.
Various experts indicate that we currently find ourselves in a society where the generation of empathy and social awareness is relevant, where data from Nonprofit Tech for Goodindicate that donation trends they will vary considerably, as a result of cultural dynamics, the popularity of certain social networks or access to the Internet.
For example, in the case of Europe, the research highlights that European people tend to be generous financially, they are also the least used to serving in person with 68 percent.
The study mentions that another striking trend today is to donate through mobile devices, as in the case of Africa, where cell phones are usually the first access to the Internet in the region and WhatsApp inspires 20 percent of donations.
The history
The story of an elderly Walmart employee has gone viral on social networks, after receiving help thanks to a tiktoker who raised $170,000 to help her pay rent for her house.
The tiktoker who identifies himself as Devan Bonagura, posted a 15-second TikTok of the woman, who tags her with the name Nola, and comes out sitting in the break room of a Walmart store in the United States.
“Life shouldn’t be so hard,” reads the text of the video, which has garnered more than 26 million views.
Given this, an overwhelming response from internists for the video prompted Bonagura to set up a GoFundMe to help the elderly lady, where in 24 hours, it exceeded 100 thousand dollars, far exceeding the initial goal with which the account was set up which was 10 thousand dollars.
After this first video and the tiktoker’s successful fundraising, he posted a second follow-up video showing him meeting Nola to transfer the money he earned on the GoFundMe.

“We are all very proud of you and wanted to offer you the $110,000 that has been raised,” the young man says in his video.
The woman thanked him for the generous donation and said it would go towards her mortgage, adding that she still needs another $60,000 to pay off the house in full. “She would take it, but she would still have to work until she pays off the other $60,000 on the house,” Nola said.
Likewise, the grandmother maintained that her mortgage is the only thing that really keeps her working at Walmart, where according to data from the same company, its workers have an average wage of 19 dollars an hour, which means that Nola would still have to work several more years to pay off the house in full.
The videos that have been spread by the tiktoker on the Chinese social network have caused him serious problems with Walmart, who presumably have already forced him to remove them.
The young man explains in another recording that he works for an external provider that sells phones within Walmart, and the manager, upon hearing the story, asked his boss that the tiktoker remove both the video and GoFundMe, since the super chain allegedly received threats .
“They’re getting a lot of backlash, so they told me I have to delete the video and delete the GoFundMe and return all the money to the people who donated it, or they’re going to get the police involved,” Bonagura said.
According to another video, the young man has since been furloughed by his employer, and fundraising had exceeded 171,000 as of Thursday, November 10.
Various US media tried to request Walmart’s position on the case, but to date they have not received a response.
Recently, social networks have become the communication outlet for the new generations, which is why they feel free to share any type of content, regardless of whether this brings them problems. Like the case of a young woman who reported being fired from Apple after sharing secrets and her way of working in the technology company.
