After its financing through Kickstarter a few years ago and the subsequent purchase of Double Fine by Microsoft, Psychonauts 2, the veteran’s new Tim schaffer, is now just over a month from reaching the stores. Today it has enjoyed a wave of impressions from various media, which has not only allowed us to know more details of its history and its gameplay, it has also served to confirm the game performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X | S, as well as in the previous generation of consoles.
Thanks to Wellplayed we have been able to know that Psychonauts 2 works at 4K and 60fps in its version of Xbox Series X, with a mode at 120 fps and 1440p, accompanied in addition to HDR and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). In the case of its little sister, Xbox Series S will be able to run the game at 1440p and 60fps.
As for Xbox One X and Xbox One, while the former will be able to move 4K and 30 fps, the second will be limited to 1080p and 30fps. The same is true on the base PS4, which is limited to Full HD resolution and 30fps.
In the case of PlayStation 5, Psychonauts 2 will not run natively, but will be the backward compatible version of PS4. This means that there will be no resolution improvements, will stay at 1440p, like PS4 Pro, but improves from 30 fps to 60 fps. It won’t have HDR or VRR either. In the case of basic PS4.
To show what Psychonauts 2 will be capable of, and put all those players who did not enjoy its first installment in a situation, Double Fine has also shared a new trailer focused on the story just a few hours ago. Psychonauts 2 will be released next August 25th 2021 for Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, PS4 (backward compatible with PS5) and PC. As an Xbox Game Studios game, it will be available at launch on Xbox Game Pass.
