PlayStation 5 has exceeded 20 million consoles soldas the media has learned GamesIndustry.biz. This means that in the last four months another 4 million consoles have been sold, since in February they exceeded 16 million units sold. As reported by the outlet, the platform has been in high demand since its launch in November 2020, and were it not for the global shortage of components, would have reached this milestone long before.
Fortunately, Sony admits it is planning a “significant increase” in console production for the rest of the year. “We are delighted to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold over 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide.“, has revealed Veronica Rogers, senior vice president, director of global sales and business operations of SIE.
PS5 production will increase this year
“Since the launch of PS5, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly next-gen gaming console that has taken the world by storm, and we want to take this moment to thank fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and what inspires us to innovate new technologies, design the future of gaming, and continue to create the best place to playVeronica explained.
Given the continued lack of PS5 stock, Rogers has advanced that the company is working on a significant increase in console production this year, which should ensure that every player who wants a PS5 ends up getting it as soon as possible. This would fit with the theory that the PS5 stock shortage will end this year, although today there are numerous companies that admit that this will not end up happening this year.
