2024 is a momentous year for Mexico because the largest presidential election in history will take place. Before choosing the next leader, it is necessary to know and analyze the work plan of each candidate. With this in mind, what should be the proposals against high-impact diseases such as cancer?
First of all, it is necessary to remember that the presidential campaign officially begins on March 1, 2024. From that date onwards, each of the candidates will be able to publish their work programs and make their proposals public.
Who are the candidates for the presidency of Mexico in 2024?
- Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo – Candidate of the alliance between Morena, PT and PVEM.
- Xóchitl Gálvez Ruiz – Candidate of the PAN, PRI and PRD coalition.
- Jorge Álvarez Máynez – Citizen Movement Candidate.
What will be your proposals against cancer?
Because cancer is a public health problem and its trend continues to rise, it is necessary to undertake a new strategy against the disease. Given this panorama, Mexican Association to Fight Cancer (AMLCC) announced an initiative.
In this case, he joined forces with México Evalúa and the Center for Economic and Budgetary Research (CIEP) to write the document: “Joint action against cancer: a debt to the health of Mexicans for a preventive, universal and quality public health system.”
The 10 types of cancer that will be the most common in 2040
The objective is to make it known to public opinion and deliver it to the presidential candidates. In addition, it seeks to make a call, in advance, to commit to the necessary actions that allow providing comprehensive and dignified care to those people who live with cancer.
“Our proposal seeks to generate a commitment on the part of the candidates for the presidency and for popularly elected positions such as senators and deputies to address the current situation of the health system regarding cancer care in the country and thus determine the possible models of care. and the planning of necessary resources so that the new government has a multidisciplinary vision to address this condition,” highlighted Mayra Galindo, general director of the AMLCC.
Priorities and proposals against cancer in Mexico
The document is structured by four axes focused on studying and understanding the state of health in Mexico compared to other countries.
- The current characteristics of health spending.
- Its effects on the services provided to the population.
- The status and evolution of the main cancers.
- Civil society proposals for the new government.
Visions and content of the document
Luis Acevedo, manager of Liaison and Public Affairs of the Mexican Association to Fight Cancernoted that public health spending in Mexico has been stagnant for more than a decade at less than 3 percent of GDP.
He highlighted that, in that same period, between 2010 and 2022, other Latin American countries systematically increased their public spending on health until reaching the WHO recommendation (6%). Consequently, each Mexican in 2022 had significantly fewer public resources for prevention, diagnosis and health care than citizens of other countries such as Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Costa Rica.
The above is proven since at least 5 types of cancer are responsible for 40% of the deaths from this condition in the country, highlighting colorectal cancer (8,283 deaths), breast cancer (8,195), and lung cancer (7,808).
According to the most recent Globocan statistics, the annual increase in new cancer cases in Mexico has increased from 195 thousand to 207 thousand cases and deaths from 90 to 96 thousand people.
With just one of the main cancers in our country, breast cancer, more than 8 thousand patients die each year. Which shows a setback and the urgent need to take action.
When will the document with the anti-cancer proposals recommended for presidential candidates be published?
The official launch of the document is scheduled for April within the framework of the 52nd anniversary of the AMLCC.
