We already have new details of the adaptation of Frankenstein of Guillermo del Toro! The story of the mythical monster has always been a dream project for the filmmaker from Guadalajara and everything is already being prepared so that his version meets –and exceeds– expectations.
In an interview with the site A.Framefrom the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), J. Miles Dale, producer of the upcoming film, talked about what awaits us in the project, which is one of the most anticipated by the followers of the creative responsible of The Pan’s Labyrinth (2006):
“In the last two movies, certainly with Alley of Lost Souls and then Pinocchio, we’ve dealt with father-son relationships,” Dale said. “Guillermo and I lost our parents in years past. When we have a strong father figure, he is an important part of our lives. This version of Frankenstein goes a lot down that thematic path. I think it’s the third film in Guillermo’s paternal trilogy. It’s exciting, and when you read the script it’s very emotional and, of course, very iconic.”
And it is that, apparently, this new interpretation of the novel written by Mary Shelley in 1818 will take some artistic licenses that obey the tastes of the Mexican filmmaker. The book deals with issues such as fear of the unknown. However, del Toro’s version will focus more on the family aspect. This is also present in the pages of the novel, which, according to the producer, is “deeply emotional.”
Dale also talked about the cast of Frankensteinby Guillermo del Toro. In previous months it was reported that the stars will be Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield and Mia Goth. But now the producer hints that there will be more surprises. This was what he said:
“It’s a pretty good cast. We’ve had a pretty good cast in the last two movies. The last one was crazy, frankly. I mean, it’s a cast to pinch me. And so was the cast of The Shape of Water. Another dream cast. I think there are a lot of actors who really want to work with Guillermo, and that makes things a little bit easier. So it should be fun. Nothing comes easy, and this isn’t going to be – it’s a great movie with an ice-bound ship and a whole lot more – but we’ve got a little bit of time left, and we’re excited to get going.”
Lastly, J. Miles Dale took the time to talk about why this adaptation is a perfect fit for the director:
“It’s the perfect combination. For me, Guillermo is getting better. I’ve been with him for 12 years, since we started producing Mama… and his evolution with these films never ceases to amaze me. As you get older, you gain more experience and hopefully some wisdom, and you get a little more in touch with who you are, and I think Guillermo is doing that. It is in a very sweet moment, and I feel privileged to participate in it ».

Jose Roberto Landaverde I love writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to cinema. I love music and am a fan of The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Paramore. My favorite movies are Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I’ll climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleportation machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented.
