Soon we will witness a new look at the legend of the “King of Rock” through priscilla, film in which we will learn about his love story with the enigmatic Priscilla Presley. Now that the premiere of the tape is approaching, it is the ex-wife of the singer who shares her opinion on the feature film made by Sofia Coppola.
Priscilla is based on Elvis and Me: The True Story of the Love Between Priscilla Presley and the King of Rock N’ Roll. This book compiles the memories of the also actress together with the man who changed her life, since she was a minor and there was a difference of 10 years when she began a relationship with him. Although it was published in 1985, this is the second time that her words have been adapted to the big screen. For Presley’s ex-wife, Sofia Coppola was the only one who could portray her complicated love story. That’s why she trusted what she planned to do with the tape (via The Hollywood Reporter).
“I understood who she was, and I felt like she could understand me. I thought that we had different stories, but that she could understand this one better than any writer because, in a way, she lived it in her style ”.
For more than a year, Coppola and his team began digging deeper into the story they wanted to tell. Finding out that Baz Luhrmann was making an Elvis Presley movie didn’t discourage them. On the contrary, she made them want to tell more about Priscilla’s perspective on being with him. The director reached out to the real Priscilla for more details and the casting process soon began. Cailee Spaeny was cast as the lead, and Jacob Elordi proved to have what it takes to bring Elvis to life.
After shooting for just 30 days and a budget of only $20 million dollars, Priscilla was able to see her memories reflected on the screen a few months ago. And she did it in the company of Coppola herself. What did she think about it?
“When I saw the movie, I tried to separate myself from myself and experience it as if I were a fan or someone just waiting to see the movie. In the end, I was actually quite emotional. Of only being 14 (years old). You look back and think, ‘Why me? Because I am here? Why am I driving a limo through the gates of Graceland (the singer’s mansion) with Elvis?’”
Curiously, those who do not think the same are other relatives of the singer. In accordance with TMZ, who reached out to them for their opinion, see the film as another way Priscilla Presley continues to squeeze money out of her relationship with Elvis. They describe the work of Sofia Coppola as “awful”and they state that “It feels like a student film. The set design is horrendous, that’s not what Graceland looks like.”
The premiere of priscilla will take place on September 4 at the 80th edition of the Venice Film Festival. It will hit theaters in the United States on October 27. The platform MUBI bought the rights to the tape. for distribution in other territories.
