Officially, it was announced that there will be an ad-supported plan on Prime Video. It is already quite common that, in the rise of streaming, different platforms offer their subscribers the opportunity to access endless movies and series, but with the condition of watching advertisements. Now, Amazon is joining the trend. Will you be able to get more clients, or will there be many cancellations involved?
The announcement of this new plan was made through an official statement on the company’s website. The first thing that stands out from that information is the point where it is clarified that no changes will be made to the prices of current memberships. That is, if you already had a subscription, you will now see ads on the screen. If you want to see any title in the catalog without advertising interruptions, it will be necessary to purchase the “ad-free” version, which will initially cost $2.99. (approximately $51 Mexican pesos).
The changes will arrive in the first half of 2024 in the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom, and later in the year they will be applied in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia.
As part of the statement, the company mentions that the strategy will be implemented with the objective of “continuing to invest in attractive content and continue to increase that investment over a long period of time.” In addition, it is added that they seek to have “significantly fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.”
Last August, Disney Plus announced that it had the idea of presenting ads in its programming, which would tentatively arrive next year. Likewise, Netflix has been doing this for just over a year. Currently, the version with ads costs $99 MXN.
What is your opinion regarding Prime Video’s ad-supported plan? Will they hire the option to watch movies and series without commercials?
José Roberto Landaverde I am fascinated by writing, listening, reading and commenting on everything related to cinema. I love music and I am a fan of The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Paramore. My favorite movies are Rocky and Back to the Future and obviously one day I will climb the “Philly Steps” and drive a DeLorean. Faithful believer that cinema is the best teleporting machine, and also that on the big screen we can all see ourselves represented.
