Prada’s next runway will be out of this world! The luxury brand will help design spacesuits for the Artemis III mission to the Moon in 2025.
In accordance with Daily Mailthe contract is an association between Prada and Axiom Space, which was awarded the NASA tender to modernize the suits to make them more comfortable.
In March of this year, the first versions of these suits were presented and now they will seek to make them comfortable for both men and women. The next visit to the Moon, the first since 1972, will feature the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface.
The Artemis III astronauts were named by NASA earlier this year as Jeremy Hansen, Victor Glover, Commander Reid Wiseman and Christina Koch.
How will Prada participate with space suits?
The Italian brand’s engineers will help develop “materials and design features to protect astronauts against the challenge of space,” according to Reuters.
Vogue reports that Axiom chose Prada because its “experience in manufacturing and leveraging materials was the reason for the deal.” With this contract, NASA gave Axiom $228.5 million for the project.
In the past, suits were designed specifically for the male body and incorporated bulky fabrics and heavier equipment. Now space clothing will be made of Mylar and Kevlar, boots made explicitly for walking on the moon, and a portable life support system.
