Pretentious, a monument to the ego, an exercise in style without substance… For many, such words are enough to describe Bard, false chronicle of a few truthsthe most recent film by Alejandro González Iñárritu, although not in the eyes of Guillermo del Toro. Perhaps the negative reviews have been a constant since its world premiere at the last edition of the Venice Film Festival until its commercial release on the big screen. But as far as the filmmaker from Guadalajara is concerned, the problem is that detractors issue an unfavorable comment thinking only about the plot, when there is so much that can be said about Bard in purely cinematographic terms.
On the other hand, it is not that Guillermo del Toro believes that the plot line of Bard be nonsense Moderating a recent question-and-answer session on Iñárritu’s feature film—with the director and members of the cast and production team present—del Toro first said he was surprised that the public didn’t understand what the film was about. And he also described it as one of the most solid proposals he has seen in terms of handling cinematographic language.
This declared the mind behind The Pan’s Labyrinth last Friday, at the Academy Museum located in Los Angeles, where the event took place (via indiewire):
«The movie [Bardo] It’s undeniably one of the most powerful things I’ve seen in terms of cinema, pure cinema.. To anyone confused about the plot and what it is about, my condolences. The fact is that the film is called Bard, which means limbo, and starts with a guy trying to fly but the road weighs heavily on him, and ends with him finally flying. And they don’t fucking get it? I am amazed.”

Del Toro went further by comparing Bard with a work by the legendary painter Vincent Van Gogh, where —in his opinion— it is more enriching to talk about the technique and not the object portrayed.
«It is extremely difficult to explain how one of the least talked about aspects of this film is the cinematography of it, and I find it absolutely amazing.“, asserted the Mexican director. «See a Van Gogh, ask for an opinion and the opinion is: ‘Well, it’s about some flowers in a pot’. The flowers are fine, the pot is pretty, but no one talks about the brushstrokes, the colors, the thickness of the paint, the color palette. It’s amazing to me.”
And with the intention of recognizing the masterful work of all the personnel involved in carrying out Bardadded:
“Everyone here did an amazing job at what they did. Each plane and each thing reaches the highest states, and the most difficult to achieve, in the cinema. Almost every shot.”
Bard It continues to be shown in some rooms in the Mexican Republic, prior to its premiere in the Netflix catalog on December 16.
