The coronavirus is not only known for its wide range of symptoms, but also for leaving a lasting impact on infected people. The prolonged or post-COVID COVID syndrome has had a profound impact on the lives of many people.
POST-COVID: Persistent Cough, Fatigue and Now Restless Anal Syndrome!
From a persistent cough, fatigue to a continuous loss of the sense of smell and taste, the SARs-COV-2 virus seriously affects people’s lives.
According to the latest report, a mysterious post-COVID illness known as “Restless Anal Syndrome” has affected an elderly Japanese man. Who was previously infected with COVID-19 and developed mild symptoms.
A 77-year-old man in Japan was recently diagnosed with a condition called “Restless Anal Syndrome.” Associated with deep anal discomfort.
The man had reportedly recently recovered from COVID-19.
The case study published in BMC Infectious Diseases reported that after weeks of recovery and a negative test for the virus, the man developed a deep and restless anal discomfort, almost 10 cm from the perineal region.
What are the symptoms?
The doctors narrate that the old man felt the need to evacuate, however, defecating did not relieve his pain or discomfort.
His symptoms reportedly worsened at night and during periods of rest. The result of a colonoscopy test showed that besides having some internal hemorrhoids, there was nothing serious or concerning inside the man’s rectum.
Other than that, the doctors said there were no signs of brain abnormalities, bladder disorders, or erectile dysfunction. However, the elderly man reported problems sleeping, anxiety and a feeling of restlessness.
Is the condition a variant of restless legs syndrome?
According to doctors at Tokyo University Hospital, the symptoms displayed by the man were found to be in agreement with those displayed by patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS). According to the experts involved in the case study, restless legs syndrome is a “neurological, common sensorimotor” disorder, caused by dysfunction of the central nervous system.
Symptoms include the need to move the leg and it is worse if the body is at rest, which coincides with the symptoms of restless anal syndrome. Doctors at the hospital believe that the post-COVID complication associated with “deep anal discomfort” is an unusual variant of RLS.
Treatment
The case study indicated that the “anal discomfort” was alleviated with a course of Clonazepam, a drug used to treat seizures. Other than that, exercise such as walking or running gave the elderly man, diagnosed with a condition, some sense of relief and comfort.
