A new collaboration between Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone will hit our screens with the film poor creatures (Poor Things). Here we tell you all the details you should know about the new feature film from the mind behind Lobster (2015), The sacrifice of the sacred deer (2017) and The favourite (2016).
What is it about poor creatures?
Based on the novel of the same name by Scottish author Alasdair Gray, the film’s official synopsis reads as follows:
“From director Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible story and fantastic evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is dying to learn. She hungry for the world experience that she lacks, Bella flees with Duncan Wedderburn, a clever and depraved lawyer, on a dizzying adventure across continents.. Free from the prejudices of her time, Bella becomes unwavering in her determination to defend equality and liberation.”
The work takes inspiration from the story of Frankenstein, but It will be an approach that is unlike anything we have seen before. The film confronts a conservative society in 19th century Europe with issues that challenge social norms from a feminist perspective.
This is what Emma Stone said about building Bella Baxter to magazine Vogue:
“It’s a fairy tale and a metaphor (clearly, this can’t happen in reality), but the idea that you can start again as a woman, as this body that is already formed, and see everything for the first time and try to understand the nature of sexuality, power, money or choices, the ability to make decisions and live by your own rules and not those of society. I thought that was a really fascinating world to enter,” confessed the Oscar winner. “Watching Bella chart that journey from such a self-centered pursuit of pleasure, whether it’s eating too many pies in Lisbon or wanting to experience pleasure in all these different abilities she learns while being taken for a man, to wanting to be a doctor and help people. In a different way, these lessons that we go through in our lives over a long period of time are happening very quickly for her, and it was a great opportunity to live a whole life that was not marked at all by shame or trauma.”.

Regarding working for the third time with Stone, in which it has been described as the best performance of her career and places her as a strong candidate for the Oscarr, Lanthimos said the following to empire:
“It’s all instinct when creating this creature, which is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Sometimes Emma would say, ‘I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, is this good?’ And sometimes I don’t even know, so we try different things. To be honest, I’m in awe of her. Later, when she was editing the movie, she would sometimes text him and say, ‘I don’t know how you do this. This is incredible’. There’s a little magic going on.”.
