Sony confirmed how many PS5s have been sold to date, as well as its plans for the future of the PlayStation brand.
Sony presented the sales numbers of Playstation 5 in recent months and detailed the brand’s plans at a meeting with shareholders: the future would have “at least” 10 games as a service, among other things.
17.3 million PS5s sold to date: How good is that number?
One of the first data revealed was that PS5 it sold 3.9 million units in the last quarter, which represents a total of 17.3 million consoles sold so far, an interesting number considering the shortage of components since the launch of current generation consoles. In fact, as well reported by the analyst Daniel Ahmad, PS4 it sold about 20.2 million consoles in the same period, however, this was a time when component shortages were not an issue.
The Japanese company is aware of the supply problems for its latest console, and last year it had informed shareholders that its sales forecasts had been reduced as a result, and that by March 2022 it planned to sell about 19.3 million consoles, instead of the 22.6 million it originally expected.
PlayStation plans: games as a service and cross-platform
On the other hand, the company announced that it expects to launch at least 10 games as a service by March 2026. Jim Ryanhead of PlayStationsaid Sony will invest heavily in this class of video games in the future. And as an interesting detail in this matter, the purchase of Bungie earlier this week for a whopping $3.6 billion, it could be a catapult for the PlayStation brand to get into live-service video games.
According Jim Ryan, PlayStation aims to expand beyond consoles, both with games and services as well as cross-platform releases for its most popular exclusives. Right now, Horizon Zero Dawn, days gone Y God of War they arrived at pc: the initial kick so that in the future we can see more PS games on other platforms.
