The Fable reboot is one of Xbox Game Studios’ most anticipated projects, but to date, the development of the game seems to be progressing very slowly and has hardly shared news since its announcement in 2020. This is mainly due to the Playground Games’ inexperience with RPG gamesas they have only worked on the Forza Horizon series to date.
Juan Fernández, former Playground Games combat designer, assured in a recent interview with Vandal that is “a very organized studio series focused on production that every two years manages to put out a Forza Hoirizon of incredible quality”, but when it comes to “expanding to something different”, “They lacked people with the knowledge of how open world gameplay is donehow you control a character and actions”.
Juan Fernández, who was also at Ninja Theory designing Helblade’s combat system, explains that world RPGs are extremely complex to make and take a long time, but “At Playground they have the mentality of doing more with lessthat if Assassin’s Creed is made by 5,000 people, they will have 150 or 200 and if they do it in 7 years, they will have Fable in 5″. He, who spent three years on the team, out of the four the game would be in development , designing combat systems and studying other games in the genre to see what made them appealing, explains that “it’s okay to be ambitious but you also have to be realistic and what I saw was that it was getting longer and longer and I, personally, don’t know if I have the creative capacity to be working on the same thing for more than x years”.
It seems that Fable will not hit stores in the short to medium term, like Everwild, the new Rare, but it doesn’t mean that development is struggling. “It’s been a super nice three years and I think Fable is a super, super interesting IP, the game has incredible potential and there is a very good team inside“, concludes Juan Fernandez.
