The initiative has been launched jointly by Baleària and Cabreiroá, who have joined forces to launch this project of circular economy and environmental awareness with which 7.1 tons of plastic have been converted into tables, chairs and benches for terraces of some of the shipping company’s ships, such as the Abel Matutes and more recently the Martín i Soler, which also sail on natural gas, a cleaner fuel.
From plastic to furniture
Under the message ‘Before being a table, I was a bottle’, in various spaces of the ships there is information about this initiative of circular economy in the furniture of the terraces. The use of this recycled wood-like material is prepared to withstand up to thirty years, and has also meant to stop emitting 13,700 Kg of CO2, according to data from Ecoembes, a non-profit environmental organization that promotes sustainability and caring for the environment. through recycling.
The two companies driving this project share common values in their commitment to sustainability and in their efforts to be more eco-efficient and generate a positive impact on their environment. In this sense, the Hijos de Rivera company – owner of the Cabreiroá brand – provides the Baleària shipping company with bottles of water to consume on board and, once these containers have been used, they are sent to a specialized supplier who recycles and transforms into practical furniture for the exterior decks of ships.
“The initial experience with the Abel Matutes ferry encouraged us to extend it to other ships, as it fits very well with our values and commitment to the environment,” says Hipólito Rodríguez, director of Onboard Services at Baleària. For his part, Emiliano Barelli, Industrial Director of Water and Environmental Sustainability at Hijos de Rivera, explains that “we use ecodesign concepts for the development of our product packaging, which has allowed us to recycle and reuse our materials in a circular way in this initiative ”.
