Peugeot has given the green light to the marketing of a 100% electric variant of the new 408. The Peugeot e-408 will be ready to land in dealerships before the year 2025. A model that will distance itself from the e-308 by sharing technology with the future DS 4 E-Tense.
The new peugeot 408 has burst onto the scene betting unapologetically on electrification. Peugeot attacks the upper part of the C-segment with a new and very interesting car with a fastback-type body. A “crossover” vehicle that has not only generated interest for its design. One of the keys that will determine its commercial future is neither more nor less than the commitment to electrification.
In its assault on European dealers, the new 408 will initially be available with a 130 hp petrol engine and two plug-in hybrid versions (PHEV) with 180 and 225 hp respectively. Despite the commitment to the use of PHEV technology, the company will not stop here and will go one step further. The Peugeot e-408, the 100% electric variant, will be a reality.
The Peugeot e-408 received the green light at the last moment
Peugeot did not have the development of an electric variant of the 408 on the agenda. Initially this model, known internally with the code P54, was conceived exclusively with internal combustion engines. Now, it was thought to offer electrified mechanics as it will finally happen. However, at the end of the convulsive year 2020, everything changed.
The new leadership of the French brand has directed most of the available resources to accelerate the transition process to the electric car. That is why the development of a PSE variant of the 408 has been ruled out. On the contrary, yes there will be an electric 408. One model, despite what might be expected at first, will not be related to the Peugeot e-308.
The electric 308 will be equipped with a 115 kW (156 hp) motor and will have a range of 400 kilometres. In addition, it will use batteries signed by the Chinese manufacturer CATL. The new e-408 will share technology with the electric DS 4 E-Tense. Under the hood there will be a new 150 kW (204 hp) Nidec M3 engine. And as for the battery, it will be produced by ACC in France from the end of next year.
Launch date of the new Peugeot e-408
When will it hit the market? Officially there is no date for the launch of the new e-408. Peugeot itself pointed out during the presentation of the 408 that the electric variant will arrive later. The latest information from France indicates that Peugeot has set the year 2024 as the deadline for the launch.
The serial production process of the new 408 will be carried out at the facilities that Stellantis has in Mulhouse (France). Therefore, it is to be expected that the electric variant will also be manufactured in said plant.
