The pediatrician María Nieves, originally from Venezuela, has viralized a video on her social networks about the evolution of a patient who attends a medical consultation to receive treatment for child malnutrition.
The patient whom the pediatrician has identified with the name of Carlenis, is a baby who came into the hands of the specialist to be treated due to child malnutrition that she suffered at 4 months of life, since her weight was only 2 kilos.

Carlenis is originally from the municipality of El Callao in the state of Bolívar, Venezuela. Yesterday the pediatrician published a new video where she shares the progress they have had in helping the patient to recover and stabilize at an appropriate weight for her age.
The progress that can be seen in the minor is a huge improvement from the first time the specialist presented the case on her tik tok account.

Ways to end child malnutrition
According to UNICEF, Currently, 149 million children under 5 years of age suffer from chronic malnutrition in the world, and 45 million suffer from acute malnutrition, according to the latest data. We are facing a nutritional crisis that the COVID-19 pandemic has only made worse.
So UNICEF has identified 5 ways to help end child malnutrition:
- Access to health care
Routine weight and height checks are one of the main tools for diagnosing whether a child is malnourished. Therefore, if health care is expanded, the incidence of this scourge can be reduced.
- Training of mothers and fathers
In countries with high levels of malnutrition, food is scarce. However, it is proven that teaching parents which foods within their reach are most beneficial for their children helps combat malnutrition.
The ready-to-use therapeutic food consists of a concentrated peanut paste that contains the necessary nutrients for the recovery of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
The milk produced by mothers is one of the most effective ways to end malnutrition. When a baby does not benefit from breastfeeding, the probability that she will die is multiplied by 14. Sometimes, it is the myths that exist about breastfeeding that deprive children of this benefit to their health.
- Access to water and sanitation
Consuming safe water and having access to adequate sanitation helps prevent infectious diseases, one of the main causes of child malnutrition.
