Ott Tänak will not participate in the final ‘big party’ of the World Rally Cars. The Hyundai driver has communicated that will not be present at the Monza Rally with his co-driver Martin Järveoja for personal and family reasons. In this way, Hyundai Motorsport has been forced to make a change in its driver line-up and Teemu Suninen will drive the second Hyundai i20 WRC Coupé on the asphalt sections of the transalpine event. With Dani Sordo and Oliver Solberg already positioned in their respective World Rally Cars, the brand has turned to the newcomer Finnish driver to replace Tänak.
The reasons that have led Ott Tänak to leave Monza have not transpired, since the Estonian pilot has issued a brief statement through social networks in which he only confirms the news: «I am devastated to say this, but sadly I cannot be of the starting at the 2021 Monza Rally. Due to family and personal matters, I will not be able to be there. This is a difficult decision to make, but it is a necessary one. I wish our team the best of luck. for the final round of the WRC, because there is still a lot to fight for. See you soon”.
Ott Tänak’s unexpected discharge opens the possibility for Teemu Suninen to get into the Hyundai i20 WRC Coupé. After splitting at the end of August M-Sport, racing a Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 in Rally Finland and signing for Hyundai to make his first appearance with the brand’s ‘Rally2’ at RACC Rally, Suninen now finds himself with this perhaps somewhat poisoned opportunity. . Hyundai arrives with remote options to conquer the title of brands and needs the help of all its drivers, including a Teemu Suninen who does not know the Hyundai i20 WRC Coupé and who has not competed with a World Rally Car since Rally Estonia.
