Engelbert Humperdinck and his ‘A Man Without Love’ welcomes us to ‘Moon Knight’ (‘Moon Knight’), the new Marvel series on Disney +. With a script by Jeremy Slater and direction by Mohamed Bial we have found an episode in which a lot of things happen despite still having an introductory tone.
By the way, from here on we will have spoilers for ‘The Little Fish Problem’, 1×01 of ‘Moon Knight’.
Introducing Steven Grant (Egyptian know-it-all), the character played by Oscar Isaac, is as manual as it is effective. Something that the actor takes on his shoulders, who leads with all his charisma and excellent precision in his execution. Except for the scenes of him with Hawke, this episode is for him alone and he makes the most of it.
But back to the episode itself. In a few minutes it is already established that there is some reason why it should be tied to the bed, “seal” the door, not remember having asked a colleague from the museum for a date (I need you to clarify this very well), etc.
The idiot in control
After following him through a day at work and seeing how he tries to stay awake, we suddenly appear in broad daylight in an unknown place. A clearly Central European and picturesque landscape in which we hear for the first time the voice of F. Murray Abraham as an insulting Khonshuwho sees that “the idiot is in control.”
After being chased by armed men, Grant ends up in the town square, where we meet for the second time—the first in the episode’s prologue—a Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) who seems to lead a kind of Egyptian sect of the goddess Ammit. As you can imagine, he gets involved and we have the first action scene of the series.
By the way, there is a theory that the place could be Latveria by the imposing castle that crowns it. What bugs me about this theory is that it makes me wonder why Death allows this to happen on his borders.
Here I find it interesting that this part, and almost the entire episode, is narrated from Grant’s point of view. We only see what the museum clerk is aware of and the rest is left to the imagination (which doesn’t need to be very imaginative either).
After his journey and waking up as if nothing had happened, Grant lives a series of discoveries: his fish has grown a fin, it’s Sunday and not Friday and in his house there is a hiding place with mobiles and other things. And that’s where Marc appears, the nightmare begins and we are already seeing better that figure in white (Khonshu) as he persecutes the man.
Night in the museum
We live the final act of the episode in the museum, where Harrow and Grant meet and the first speaks clearly about his goal: to free the goddess Ammit so that there is a new era of justice in the world and for this he needs the mystical Beetle What does our protagonist have? At night we end with a fight with a beast, or rather with Grant giving control to Marc in what is revealed to us for the first time at Moon Knight. Fade to black. Credits.
The truth is that we must recognize that this first episode is full of interesting situations and moments who row in favor of the proposal that fools around with mild terror. Yes, it is true that, as effective as it is to end like this, some subsequent action has been missed.
Thus, the series leaves us until next week with several questions in mind: like who is Layla and what relationship does she have with Marc; In addition to delving into issues such as Egyptian mythology and exactly what happens to our hero’s head. How will the series continue? Well, we will have to wait until Wednesday to find out.
