There are still a few days left for ‘Moon Knight’ to premiere in Disney+ next March 30 -although we already have first opinions and they are enthusiastic-. However, the promotional campaign has long since intensified its pace, which made oscar isaac visited Madrid last week.
In Espinof we had the opportunity to participate in a round table with the actor, in which different aspects of ‘Moon Knight’ were reviewedfrom its references outside the Marvel universe to what a blockbuster needs for Isaac to be interested in participating in it or what other superheroes in this universe would be interested in coinciding with in future projects.
What does a blockbuster need to attract you
And the fact is that Isaac has participated in several blockbusters – not long ago we could also see him in ‘Dune’ – but he himself made it clear that “my sensitivity is not mainstream” and that the key factor for being attracted to this type of project is “that there is space to create a character that catches my attention“. In the case of ‘Moon Knight’ he highlighted the following about his differences compared to other similar productions:
It was very important that those who are watching the series feel that he is inside the character, that he is confused and does not know what is real and what is a dream. That is different. Also the elements of psychological thriller and horror, even the type of humor is different. It’s not self-aware or self-referential, it’s a bit along the lines of Peter Sellers, a character who doesn’t know he’s funny.
On the fact of playing two different characters, he stated that it was “just as fun as complicated” and that “I was never bored, I never knew how or what I was going to do, every day I found myself with a new challenge“For my part, I was curious about the fact that here he plays the hero but in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ he was the villain of the role, so I wanted to know what kind of role he enjoys the most. This was what he replied:
I have enjoyed ‘Moon Knight’ much more than ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. The work is the same whether or not you are a villain. The first thing is not to judge. Find and investigate that point of view and feel a way, however horrible what you are thinking, to empathize with that point of view.
References and situation within the Marvel Universe
In addition, “Moon Knight” follows the path of Marvel in its Phase 4 of exploring mental health issues. Isaac highlighted the work of the writing team led by Jeremy Slater and in this regard the parallels he saw in the series with the movie ‘Jacob’s Ladder’, one of his favorites on this subject. In addition, the actor commented on the following about the references of the series outside the Marvel Universe:
As I said, ‘Jacob’s Ladder’ for me was one of the films that I felt, both psychologically and in terms of point of view. ‘Memento’, ‘Fight Club’, ‘Indiana Jones’ for the adventure part.
The actor also liked “the liberating“which was to adapt a character not so well known by the public, since that allowed them”focus on what interests us“. In fact, there is also scope within the MCU, since “there are no obvious connections with the universe although it is part of it. The story is not about that“, although he was very insistent that it resembled ‘Iron Man,’ his favorite Marvel movie, in terms of also feeling like a character study.
Despite this, he was very knowledgeable right now of the ‘Moon Knight’ universe, noting that he really liked the character’s comics written by Warren Ellisand also that in case he coincides with other Marvel characters, he would like the following:
With Sons of Midnight, which are Moon Knight, Punisher, Ghost Rider and Daredevil. That would be interesting to me, because it would be something new.
The Poe Dameron of ‘Star Wars’ also clarified that there are officially no plans for Moon Knight to appear in other Marvel productions and that this will depend on the public reacting positively to the Disney+ series, where for him the key to not getting bored was “mix“of action scenes with more introspective situations, including those moments where he has to interact with himself.
Lastly, I inquired about what it was like to work with Gaspard Ulliel, the French actor who recently died in a tragic skiing accident. This is what he said about it:
What a tragedy, it was horrible what happened. We shot three days together and he was a very nice guy, very generous. We talk about his son, his family…
